In Bijbels Grieks is het verbonden met Orcus, de onderaardse gebieden, een donkere en sombere plaats in de diepte van de aarde, de gewone ruimte voor de zielen zonder lichaam. Hades is gewoonlijk de woonplaats van de bozen, Luk. 16:23, Opb. 20:13,14; een heel ongezellige plaats.
