** ἀπιστέω, -ῶ (< ἄπιστος), [in LXX: Wi 1:2 10:7 12:17 18:13, Si 1:27, II Mac 8:13*;] 1. to disbelieve, be faithless: Mk 16:11, 16, Lk 24:11, 41, Ac 28:24, I Pe 2:7; so prob. also Ro 3:3, II Ti 2:13 (ICC, CGT, in ll.; MM, s.v.). 2. = ἀπειθέω (Hdt.; on this sense in Ro 3:3, II Ti 2:13, v.   future passive ἀπιστηθήσομαι Diodorus Siculus Historicus 32.10, but ἀπιστήσομαι in Pass. sense, Plato Philosophus “Respublica” 450c :—to be ἄπιστος, and so:
__I disbelieve, distrust, ἐγὼ τὸ μὲν οὔ ποτ᾽ ἀπίστεον Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 13.339; τύχην ἀ. __II ={ἀπειθέω}, disobey, τινί Herodotus Historicus 6.108, frequently in Trag.and Plato Philosophus, Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 640, Sophocles Tragicus “Antigone” 381 (Lyric poetry), “Tr.” 1183, 1224, Plato Philosophus “Apologia” 29c, al. : absolutely, to be disobedient, τοῖς ἀπιστοῦσιν τάδε in these things, Sophocles Tragicus “Antigone” 219, compare 656 ; ἢν δ᾽ ἀπιστῶσι but if they refuse to comply, Euripides Tragicus “Supplices” 389, compare Plato Philosophus “Leges” 941c.
__II.2 to be faithless, εἰ ἡμεῖς ἀπιστοῦμεν, ἐκεῖνος πιστὸς μένει NT.2Tim.2.13.
