αυλος aulos van ἄω, αὔω, "blazen"; Uit de beschrijving die Paulus geeft (1 Cor. 14:7) blijkt dat je meerdere tonen uit dit instrument kan halen. Het woord zelf is afgeleid van een woord dat “blazen” betekent en geeft dus al aan dat het om een blaasinstrument gaat. Er zijn een tweetal varianten van dit blaasinstrument, de eerste bestaat uit een lange en korte pijp en hadden een dubbelriet. Het was dus een voorloper van de moderne hobo. De korte pijp werd gebruikt voor de melodie, terwijl de lange als begeleiding diende. De tweede variant was eenvoudiger en bestond alleen uit de korte pijp.
