ἐκεῖνος, -η, -ο (< ἐκεῖ), [in LXX chiefly for הַהוּא ,הוּא H1931, and cogn. forms ;] demonstr. pron., that person or thing (ille), implying remoteness as compared with οὗτος (hic 1. absol., emphatic he, she, it: opp. to οὗτος, Lk 18:14, Ja 4:15; ἡμεῖς, He 12:25; ὑμεῖς, Mt 13:11, Mk 4:11; ἄλλοι, Jo 9:9; ἐγώ, Jo 3:30; to persons named, Mk 16:[10, 13, 20], Jo 2:21; of one (absent) who is not named, contemptuously (Abbott, JG, §§2385, 2732), Jo 7:11 9:28; with respect, of Christ, I Jo 2:6 3:3preceding noun, Mk 16:[10], Jo 7:45; resumption of a participial subject, Jo 1:33 9:37 10:1, Ro 14:14, al. (on its reference in Jo 19:35, v. Westc, in l.; Moffatt, Intr., 568; Sanday, Fourth Gospel, 77ff.). 2. ἐκεῖνος, ἐκείνη, ἐκεῖνο,
  also κεῖνος (regular in Epic dialect, Ionic dialect (as “SIG” 37.3 (Teos, 5th c.BC), though Herodotus Historicus prefers ἐκεῖνος), and Lyric poetry, in Trag. κεῖνος only where the metre requires, compare Aeschylus Tragicus “Persae” 230, 792, Sophocles Tragicus “Ajax” 220 (anap.) , etc.; but not in Attic dialect Prose, and in Comedy texts only in mock Trag. passages): Aeolic dialect κῆνος Sappho Lyrica 2.1 : Doric dialect τῆνος Theocritus Poeta Bucolicus 1.4, etc. : in Comedy texts, strengthened ἐκεινοσί Eupolis Comicus 277 (probably), Aristophanes Comicus “Equites” 1196, etc. ; ἐκεινοσίν Apollonius Dyscolus Grammaticus “de Pronominibus;” 59.24 : (ἐκεῖ):—demonstrative pronoun the person there, that person or thing, Homerus Epicus, etc. : generally with reference to what has gone immediately before, Plato Philosophus “Phaedo” 106c, Xenophon Historicus “Institutio Cyri (Cyropaedia)” 1.6.9, etc. ; but when οὗτος and ἐκεῖνος refer to two things before mentioned, ἐκεῖνος, properly belongs to the more remote, in time, place, or thought, οὗτος to the nearer, Plato Philosophus “Euthydemus” 271b, etc.: but ἐκεῖνος sometimes = the latter, Xenophon Historicus “Memorabilia” 1.3.13, Demosthenes Orator 8.72, Aristoteles Philosophus “Politica” 1325a7, etc.: ἐκεῖνος is frequently the predicate to οὗτος or ὅδε, οὗτος ἐκεῖνος τὸν σὺ ζητέεις Herodotus Historicus 1.32; τοῦτ᾽ ἔστ᾽ ἐκεῖνο Euripides Tragicus “Helena” 622 ; ἆρ᾽ οὗτός ἐστ᾽ ἐκεῖνος ὅν..; Aristophanes Comicus “Pax” 240, etc. : also joined as if one pronoun, τοῦτ᾽ ἐκεῖνο..δέρκομαι Sophocles Tragicus “Electra” 1115, etc. ; κατ᾽ ἐκεῖνο καιροῦ at that point of time, Plutarchus Biographus et Philosophus “Alexander” 32, etc.; ἐς ἐ. τοῦ χρόνου Dio Cassius Historicus 46.49 ; ἀλλ᾽ ἐκεῖνο, à propos, Lucianus Sophista “Nigr.” 8.

__7 in Aeolic dialect and Attic dialect the substantive with ἐκεῖνος properly has the Article (κῆνος ὤνηρ Alcaeus Lyricus “Supp.” 25.6), and ἐκεῖνος may precede or follow the substantive, ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ Thucydides Historicus 1.20, Plato Philosophus “Phaedo” 57a ; τὴν στρατείαν ἐ., τὸν ἄνδρ᾽ ἐ., Thucydides Historicus 1.10, Aristophanes Comicus “Pax” 649: in Poets the Art. is frequently omitted, ἤματι κείνῳ Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 2.37, etc. ; but when this is the case in Prose, ἐκεῖνος follows the substantive, ἡμέρας ἐκείνης Thucydides Historicus 3.59, etc.
__II adverb ἐκείνως in that case, prev. author 1.77, 3.46 ; in that way, Hippocrates Medicus “περὶ ἀγμῶν” 27; ζῆν Plato Philosophus “Respublica” 516d, etc. : Ionic dialect κείνως Herodotus Historicus 1.120.
