  mark the surface, graze, ὀϊστὸς ἐπέγραψε χρόα φωτός Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 4.139, compare 13.553, 2nd c.AD(?): Pollianus Epigrammaticus 4.179; μιν ἐπιγράψας having put a mark on the lot, Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 7.187; ἄκροις δακτύλοις ἐ . trifle with dishes, Lucianus Sophista “Am.” 42.—In Homerus Epicus the word has not the sense of writing.

__III.4. middle, ἐπιγράφεσθαι μάρτυρας cause to be endorsed on a deposition as witnesses, Demosthenes Orator 54.31; κλητῆρα οὐδ᾽ ὁντινοῦν ἐπιγραψάμενος prev\. author 21.87 ; but ἐπιγράφεσθαι τίμημα τῷ κλήρῳ set one's valuation on the property, Isaeus Orator 3.2.

__III.5.b. metaphorically, Ὅμηρον ἐπιγράφεσθαι attribute one's fluency to Homer, Lucianus Sophista “Dem.Enc.” 2; πρεσβυτέρους ἐ. χρόνους claim the authority of greater antiquity, prev\. author “Am.” 35.
