ὀκνέω, -ῶ (< ὄκνος, shrinking, hesitation), [in LXX: Nu 22:16 (מנע ^H4513 ni.), Jg 18:9 (עצל ^H6101 ni.), To 12:6, 13, Jth 12:13, Si 7:35, IV Mac 14:4*;] to shrink from doing, hesitate to do (Hom., Thuc., al.); hence, to delay c. inf., Ac 9:38 (cf. Nu 22:16, and v. MM, xviii).†

Epic dialect ὀκνείω Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 5.255 : imperfect ὤκνεον 20.155 : future -ήσω Isocrates Orator 6.72 : aorist ὤκνησα Demosthenes Orator 18.103, etc. : (ὄκνος):—shrink from doing, scruple, hesitate to do a thing, with infinitive, ὀκνείω ἵππων ἐπιβαινέμεν Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 5.255; ἀρχέμεναι πολέμοιο ὤκνεον 20.155. —In Attic. mostly with collateral sense of the feeling which causes the hesitation, and so,
__1 of shame or fear (in a moral sense), ὀκνῶ προδότης καλεῖσθαι I shrink from being called, fear to be called, Sophocles Tragicus “Philoctetes” 93, compare Thucydides Historicus 5.61, Lysias Orator “Fragmenta” 23 ; οἷα ἐγὼ ὀκνῶ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὀνομάσαι shrink from naming, hesitate to name, Demosthenes Orator 2.19, compare Plato Philosophus “Gorgias” 462e; τοσαῦθ᾽ ὅσ᾽ ὀκνήσαιμ᾽ ἂν.. εἰπεῖν Demosthenes Orator 18.103, compare 24.7, etc.

__3 most commonly of cowardice or indolence, μεμηνότ᾽ ἄνδρα.. ὀκνεῖς ἰδεῖν prev. author “Aj.” 81, compare Thucydides Historicus 1.120, etc. —The Homeric constr. with infinitive continued most common (see. above): rarely with accusative, πῶς τὸ μητρὸς λέκτρον οὐκ ὀκνεῖν με δε; Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Tyrannus” 976; ὃν μήτ᾽ ὀκνεῖτε prev. author “OC” 731, compare Xenophon Historicus “Institutio Cyri (Cyropaedia)” 2.2.21; ἂν ὀκνῇς τὸ μανθάνειν Philemo Comicus 213.1; also ὀ. περί τινος Xenophon Historicus “Institutio Cyri (Cyropaedia)” 4.5.20; ὀ. μή..
