οὐδείς,
feminine οὐδεμίᾰ (never nominative accusative -μίη, -μίην, since οὐδεμιῇ is probably in Callias Epigrammaticus “Aet.Oxy.” 2080.56 , rarely οὐδ᾽ ἴα Sappho Lyrica 69, Moschus Bucolicus 4.40), neut. οὐδέν (declined and accentuated like{εἷς}, μία, ἕν) , not one, i.e. no one, none, used by Homerus Epicus, Hesiodus Epicus, and Pindarus Lyricus (who prefer οὔτις) only in neut. nom. and acc. οὐδέν , except in the phrase τὸ ὃν μένος οὐδενὶ εἴκων Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 22.459, al. ; οὐδείς is found in Bacchylides Lyricus “fragment” 28; but all genders and cases are common in all other writers, Herodotus Historicus 1.32, 33, etc. : rare in plural, no set of persons or things, Andocides Orator 1.23 (uncertain conjecture), Xenophon Historicus “Respublica Lacedaemoniorum” 3.1; πρὸς οὐδένας τῶν Ἑλλήνων Demosthenes Orator 18.23 (variant), compare 19.31,66,312, 24.214, 27.7 ; οὐδένων εἰσὶ βελτίους, i.e. οὔ τινων ἄλλων, prev. author 2.17 (compare οὐδενὸς βελτίους Plato Philosophus “Protagoras” 324d): dat. pl. οὐδέσιν Pausanias Periegeta 3.24.3; for another sense of the pl., see below 11.3. —In Ion. the pl. is usually οὐδαμοί.
__2 οὐ. ὅστις οὐ every one, Herodotus Historicus 3.72, etc. ; οὐδὲν ὅ τι οὐ every, prev. author 5.97 ; this came to be regarded as one word, so that οὐδείς passed into the same case as ὅστις, οὐδένα ὅντινα οὐ κατέκλασε Plato Philosophus “Phaedo” 117d; οὐδενὸς ὅτου οὐ πάντων ἂν.. πατὴρ εἴην prev. author “Prt.” 317c, compare 323b; οὐδενὶ ὅτῳ οὐκ ἀποκρινόμενος prev. author “Men.” 70c; so οὐ. ὃς οὐχὶ.. ὀνειδιεῖ Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Tyrannus” 373; οὐδὲν γὰρ.. οὔτ᾽ αἰσχρὸν οὔτ᾽ ἄτιμόν ἐσθ᾽, ὁποῖον οὐ.. οὐκ ὄπωπ᾽ ἐγώ prev. author “Ant.” 4.
__3 later οὐδὲν ὅ τι without οὐ, = nothing, οὐδὲν ὅ τι παρήσω Agathias Historicus et Epigrammaticus “Praef.” p.137 Demosthenes Orator, al.
__4 ὅστις οὐδείς not one, ἐτεθνήκεσαν δὲ αὐτῶν μὲν ἀμφὶ τοὺς τετρακοσίους, Ρωμαίων δὲ ὅστις οὐδείς prev. author 5.20.
__II naught, good for naught, ὦ νῦν μὲν οὐ. αὔριον δ᾽ ὑπέρμεγας Aristophanes Comicus “Equites” 158, compare Euripides Tragicus “Fragmenta” 187.5 ; τὸ μὲν γένος ἀνδρῶν οὐδέν Pindarus Lyricus “N.” 6.3: frequently in neut., οὐδὲν εἰδώς knowing naught, Theognis Elegiacus 141, Euripides Tragicus “Fragmenta” 391 ; οὐκ ἄρ᾽ ᾔστην οὐδὲν ἄλλο πλὴν δάκνειν knew nothing save how to.., Aristophanes Comicus “Aves” 19 ; οὐδὲν λέγειν to say naught, see at {λέγω} (B) III.6 ; τὸ οὐδ᾽ οὐδέν the absolute nothing, Plato Philosophus “Theaetetus” 180a.
__II.2 in neuter, of persons, οὐδέν εἰμι Sophocles Tragicus “Philoctetes” 951, etc.; οὐδὲν εἶ Aristophanes Comicus “Ecclesiazusae” 144; πρὸς τὸν οὐδέν Euripides Tragicus “Phoenissae” 598; τὸ μηδὲν εἰς οὐδὲν ῥέπει prev. author “fragment” 532.2; ᾧ ἀνεμέσητον.. οὐδενὶ εἶναι Plato Philosophus “Theaetetus” 175e.
__II.3 in plural, οὐδένες ἐόντες ἐν οὐδαμοῖσι ἐοῦσι Ἕλλησι being nobodies, Herodotus Historicus 9.58; ὄντες οὐδένες Euripides Tragicus “Andromache” 700, compare “IA” 371 ; ὁ μηδὲν ὢν κἀξ οὐδένων κεκλήσομαι uncertain conjecture in prev. author “Ion” 594; οὐ γὰρ ἠξίου τοὺς μηδένας Sophocles Tragicus “Ajax” 1114.

__II.5 τὸ οὐδέν naught, zero, in Arith., Nicomachus Gerasenus Mathematicus “Arithmetica Introductio” 2.6 ; used by Democritus as a name for Place, Aristoteles Philosophus “Fragmenta” 208.
__III neuter οὐδέν as adverb, not at all, naught, ἄριστον Ἀχαιῶν οὐ. ἔτισεν Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 1.412, compare 24.370, Herodotus Historicus 5.34, Thucydides Historicus 8.22, etc.; so οὐδέν τι Xenophon Historicus “Memorabilia” 1.2.42, etc.; οὐ. τι πάντως Herodotus Historicus 5.65 : in answers, nothing, never mind, no matter, Euripides Tragicus “Medea” 64, “IT” 781, Aristophanes Comicus “Nubes” 694 ; οὐδέν γε not at all, prev. author “Av.” 1360, etc. ; οὐδὲν μᾶλλον, οὐδὲν ἧσσον, οὐδὲν ὕστερος, see at {μάλα} 11.5, ἥσσων 111, ὕστερος Aeschylus Tragicus I.
__III.2 οὐδὲν ἄλλο ἤ, see at {ἄλλος} III. 2.
__B REMARKS: the more emphatic and literal sense, not even one, i.e. none whatever, belongs to the full form, οὐδὲ εἷς, οὐδὲ μία, οὐδὲ ἕν, which is never elided, even in Comedy texts (see. Aristophanes Comicus “Ranae” 927, “Lys.” 1045 (Lyric poetry), “Pl.” 138, 1115) , but frequently has a Particle inserted between, compare οὐδέ Bacchylides Lyricus — Zenobius Paroemiographus (in “Etymologicum Magnum” 639.17) and others wrongly assume οὐδείς as a compd. not of οὐδέ and εἷς, but of οὐ and δείς (which see). (Later οὐθείς, which see)
