  in nominative and accusative singular, Aeschylus Tragicus “Supplices” 716, Sophocles Tragicus “Philoctetes” 482, “fragment” 726, Euripides Tragicus “Helena” 1563, 1582, “Or.” 362, “IT” 1134 (Lyric poetry) ; nominative πρῷρ᾽ with elision in “IG” 2.2836 ; accusative πρῴρᾱν is falsa lectio in Apollonius Rhodius Epicus 1.372 ; πρῴρην is found in codices of Herodotus Historicus 1.194, 7.180 , ἡ, forepart of a ship, prow, εἰς ἴκρια νηὸς πρῴρης Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 12.230 (here probably adjectival with νηός),compare Herodotus Historicus same places, etc.; πνεῦμα τοὐκ πρῴρας a contrary wind, opposed to κατὰ πρύμναν, Sophocles Tragicus “Philoctetes” 639.

__3 end of a vinebranch, Theophrastus Philosophus “Historia Plantarum” 2.1.3 (conjecture in “CP” 3.14.7). (Written πρώρρα in Polybius Historicus 8.6.1, al., but πρωιρ- in “PSI” 4.382.2 (3rd c.BC) , compare πρῳρατικό; κυανοπρωΐρους ?? is cited by “Etymologicum Magnum” 692.32 from Homerus Epicus, and κυανοπρώϊραν from Simonides Lyricus 241: hence πρῷρα is probably contr. from a word of the form ¯ ¯ ?~X, but whether from *πρώειρα, as inferred by Herodianus Grammaticus Gr. 2.410 , is doubtful; perhaps from *πρώαιρα, compare νείαιρ; -πρωῑρ- in Homerus Epicus and Simonides Lyricus may have arisen by 'distraction' of the contracted form.)
