Hedendaagse betekenis
In de taalkunde is rhema het deel van een zin dat niet tot het thema behoort (zie hierboven A.3). De term wordt vooral in de functionalistische taalkunde en de tekstlinguïstiek gebruikt om tot een thema-rhema-indeling te komen.
Voorbeelden:
- Wat doe je morgen?
- Morgen komt Eva.
In 1) is morgen rhematisch in 2) is het thematisch, komt Eva is nu rhema. De accentuering ondersteunt doorgaans deze thema-rhema-geleding: morgen in 1) en Eva in 2) dragen het zinsaccent (Colloquium Neerlandicum 13 (1997), Nederlands 200 jaar later.
