* σπιλάς, -άδος, ἡ (on the gender in Ju, l.c., v. Mayor, Ju., 41), 1. poët. in cl., a rock or reef over which the sea dashes (Polyb., FlJ, al.). Metaph., of men whose conduct causes danger to others, Ju 12, R, txt. (but v. infr.). 2. In late writers = σπίλος (q.v.), a spot, stain; metaph., Ju, l.c., R, mg. (cf. Mayor, 41, but v. supr.).†

__A rock over which the sea dashes (opposed to ὕφαλοι πέτραι in “Anthologia Graeca” 11.390 (Lucillius Epigrammaticus)), νῆάς γε ποτὶ σπιλάδεσσιν ἔαξαν κύματα Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 3.298; δοῦπον ἄκουσε ποτὶ σπιλάδεσσι θαλάσσης 5.401 (see. πάγος) ; ἐφ᾽ ὑψηλαῖς σπιλάδεσσι Sophocles Tragicus “Fragmenta” 371 (Lyric poetry) ; πλαγκταὶ σ. Apollonius Rhodius Epicus 4.932; σ. εἰν ἁλὶ πέτρη prev. author 3.1294 ; ῥεῖθρον ἀπὸ σ.
