  Epic dialect and poetry σᾰόφρων (as in Homerus Epicus, see below, Pindarus Lyricus “Pae.” 9.46) , ονος, ὁ, ἡ: neuter σῶφρον:—properly of sound mind (from σῶς, φρήν, compare Plato Philosophus “Cratylus” 411e, Aristoteles Philosophus “Ethica Nicomachea” 1140b11) : hence, discreet, prudent, οὐκ ἄν με σαόφρονα μυθήσαιο ἔμμεναι Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 21.462, compare Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 4.158 ; opposed to ἄφρων, Theognis Elegiacus 431, 454, 497 ; opposed to νήπιος, prev. author 483 ; opposed to ἀνόητος, Herodotus Historicus 1.4; σώφρονες περὶ θεούς Xenophon Historicus “Memorabilia” 4.3.2; σωφρονέστατος ἐν τῇ τέχνῃ Hippocrates Medicus “προρρητικόν” 2.2.
