  also ὑπολειπ-λιμπάνω (which see), leave remaining, ἅ ῥα τῇ προτέρῃ ὑπέλειπον ἔδοντες Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 16.50; ὑ. λόγον αὐτοῖς, ὡς.. οἷοί τ᾽ ἔσονται Thucydides Historicus 8.2 (compare below 111); πολεμίους τινὰς ὑ. prev. author 6.17; τὸν πόλεμον τοῖς παισί prev. author 1.81 ; οὐδεμίαν ὑπερβολὴν ὑ. τινί leave him no possibility of exceeding, Isocrates Orator 6.105 (f.l. for{κατα-}); τοῖς ἔγγιστα τιμωρεῖσθαι ὑ. __III.2 retain, τοῦ ὕδατος περὶ ἑωυτόν Herodotus Historicus 2.25; δόρυ ἓν ὧν ἔσχον Arrianus Historicus “Tactica” 4.6, compare 39.1 ; reserve, ἑαυτῷ ἑκατὸν ἅρματα LXX.2Ki.8.4; σαυτῷ ταύτην τὴν ὄλυραν “PHib.” 1.50.4 (3rd c.BC)+3rd c.BC+; τὸν ὑπάρχοντα χόρτον τοῖς προβάτοις “PCair.Zen.” 645.6 (3rd c.BC) ; ὑπολιποῦ τόπον leave a space, prev. work 327.83 (3rd c.BC): but in Demosthenes Orator 18.219 the active ὑπέλειπε.. ἑαυτῷ.. ἀναφοράν (left himself a means of escape) is the best reading.
