choiros, zn mnl.; afleiding onzeker, traditioneel afgeleid van het Proto-Helleense *kʰóřřos, van het Proto-Indo-Europese *|ʰóryos "varken" (vandaar Proto-Albanese *darja en Albanese derr), van *|ʰer- "opgewonden zijn, borstelig" +‎ * -yos, vanwaar *ǵʰḗr "egel" (Wiktionary, χοῖρος). Anderen zien een afleiding van ĝhoryo- "grijs" (LSJ, χοῖρος).
