De wilg welke in Ps 137:2 en Ezech. 17:5 wordt genoemd is niet zoals in veel oudere commentaren (Gesenius: Ps. 137:2 where the Salix Babylonica, Linn. is to be understood, with its pendulous foliage, a symbol of grief and mourning; Germ. Trauerweide , weeping willow; Keil & Delitzsch Ps 137: The willow (צַפְצָפָה) and viburnum, those trees which are associated with flowing water in hot low-lying districts, are indigenous in the richly watered lowlands of Babylonia. עָרָב a (עֲרָבָה), if one and the same with Arab. grb, is not the willow, least of all the weeping-willow, which is called ṣafsaf mustahi in Arabic, “the bending-down willow,” but the viburnum with identate leaves, described by Wetzstein on Isa 44:4. The Talmud even distinguishes between tsaph-tsapha and ‛araba, but without our being able to obtain any sure botanic picture from it.) wordt gesteld de treurende wilg (Salix babylonica), daar deze van oorsprong uit China komt en pas later (vermoedelijk pas in de Middeleeuwen) naar het Midden-Oosten en Europa is geïmporteerd. Moderne vertalingen (NET On the poplars in her midst we hang our harps; NIV There on the poplars we hung our harps.) noemen de Populier (Populus euphratica Olivier).
