עַכְבָּר m. a mouse , especially a field mouse, 1 Sa. 6:4 , 5 , 11 , 18 ; Lev. 11:29 ; but some esculent species of dormouse appears to be meant, Isaiah 66:17 . Indeed, Arab. عَكْبَرُ is i.q. عَكْبَرُ χοιρογρύλλιος , an animal good for food, like a rabbit, mus jaculus , Linn. See Bochart in Hieroz. t. i. p. 1017, who regards this word as being compounded of the Chaldee עכל to devour, and בַּר a field ( l being elided); I prefer from עַכֵּל to devour, to digest food, and בַּר in the signification of corn . [But see עָכַב .]
