Conrad, 7 Apr 2005: The city-name is a neuter plural QUATEIRA, QUATEIRWN; the city in Lydia was founded by Macedonian Greeks and the name might theoretically relate to the rutting of pigs (QEAW), but I don't see this suggested anywhere and I would guess that speculative etymological guesses are not worth much in response to a question of this sort.

Woodruff, 8 Apr 2005, Thyatira: Sir William Ramsay suggests that it comes from the Lydian word _theira_ meaning "town" so that Thyrateira meant "town of Thya" (Historical Geography of Asia Minor, p 114) Colin Hemer seems to concur in his work The Letters to the Seven Churches of Asia Minor.
