ἐχθρός, -ά, -όν (< ἔχθος, hatred), [in LXX chiefly for אוׄיֵב ^H342, also for צַר ^H6146, etc.;] 1. hated, hateful (Hom.): opp. to ἀγαπητός, Ro 11:28. 2. Actively, hating, hostile: Ro 5:10, I Co 15:25, II Th 3:15; c. gen. pers. (ἔχθος) hated, hateful, of persons and things, frequently from Homerus Epicus downwards (Homerus Epicus has it only in this Pass. sense) ; ἐ. γάρ μοι κεῖνος ὁμῶς Ἀΐδαο πύλῃσι Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 14.156, Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 9.312 ; ἐχθρὸν δέ μοί ἐστιν c.infinitive, 'tis hateful to me to.., Odyssea Homerus Epicus “Odyssey” 12.452; θεοῖσιν ἐ. Hesiodus Epicus “Theogonia” 766, Theognis Elegiacus 601, Aristophanes Comicus “Equites” 34; ὁ θεοῖσιν ἐ. Plato Comicus 74, etc. ; compare θεοισεχθρός.

__III as substantive, ἐχθρός, ὁ, enemy, where the active and passive senses frequently coincide, Hesiodus Epicus “Opera et Dies” 342, Pindarus Lyricus “P.” 2.84, etc.; ἀνὴρ ἐ. Herodotus Historicus 1.92; ὁ Διὸς ἐ. Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 120 (anap.); ἐχθροῖς ἐχθρὰ πορσύνων prev. author “Ag.” 1374; εἴ.. τινα ἴδοι ἐχθρὸν ἑαυτοῦ Thucydides Historicus 4.47; οἱ ἐμοὶ ἐ. prev. author 6.89, etc.—Acc. to Ammonius Grammaticus “περὶ ὁμοίων καὶ διαφόρων λέξεων” p.63 V., ἐχθρός is one who has been φίλος, but is alienated; πολέμιος one who is at war; δυσμενής one who has long been alienated and refuses to be reconciled.
