ὑακίνθος, -ου, ό [in LXX chiefly for תְּכֵלֶת H8504 ;] hyacinth; (a) in cl., a flower, prob. the dark blue iris; (b) in late writers, a precious stone of the same colour, perhaps the sapphire: Re 21:20 (Phil., FlJ, al.).†

  Hyacinthus, a Laconian youth, beloved by Apollo, who killed him by an unlucky cast of the discus, Euripides Tragicus “Helena” 1469 (Lyric poetry), Apollodorus Damascenus Mechanicus 3.10.3, Pausanias Periegeta 3.1.3: compare Ὑακίνθια.
