By means of textual and historical analyses of the Old Testament Shechem traditions the author of this book tries to demonstrate that the city of Shechem and its sacred enclosure played a decisive part in the formation of the twelve-tribe amphictyony of Israel on Canaanite soil as well as in further development of Israelite culture.
