  also α, ον Euripides Tragicus “Hercules Furens” 413 (Lyric poetry) ; Ionic dialect Ἀρήϊος, η, ο; Aeolic dialect Ἀρεύϊος Alcaeus Lyricus “Supp.” 1a.10 : (Ἄρης):— devoted to Ares, warlike, martial; in Homerus Epicus , mostly of warriors, Μενέλαος Ἀρήιος Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 3.339, al.; Ἀρήϊοι υἷες Ἀχαιῶν 11.800, al. ; of arms, Ἀρήϊα τεύχεα δύω 6.340, compare 10.407 ; the Attic dialect form only in the phrase τεῖχος Ἄρειον 4.407, al.; also in Herodotus Historicus, ἀρήιοι ἀγῶνες conflicts in real war, opposed to γυμνικοί, 9.33; ὅπλον ἀ. 4.23 ; of a man, as substantive, warrior, 6.98; Ἀθηνᾶ Ἀρεία “OGI” 229.70 (from Smyrna), compare “IG” 12(5).913 (from Tenos): Comp. ἀρειότερος (which see) Theognis Elegiacus 548 is probably to be read instead of med from ἀρείων, as χερειότερος from χερείων.
