  imperfect contraction in Epic dialect ἐσύλα, σύλα, Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 6.28, 4.116 ; Ionic dialect Iterat. σύλασκε Hesiodus Epicus “Scutum Herculis” 480 :—passive, future συληθήσομαι Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 761, συλήσομαι Pausanias Periegeta 4.7.10 :—strip off, especially strip off the arms of a slain enemy, Homerus Epicus (only in Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad”), Lyric poetry, etc. Construction:
__1 in full, with accusative person et of things, strip off from another, strip him of his arms (compare σκυλεύω), μή μιν Ἀχαιοὶ τεύχεα συλήσωσι Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 15.428, compare 16.500 ; ἔπειτα δὲ καὶ τὰ (i.e. ἔναρα).. νεκροὺς ἂμ πεδίον συλήσετε 6.71; με κασίγνητον συλᾷς Euripides Tragicus “Iphigenia Taurica” 157 (anap.); τὴν θεὸν τοὺς στεφάνους σεσυλήκασιν Demosthenes Orator 24.182 :— passive, with accusative of things, to be stripped, robbed, deprived of a thing, σκῆπτρα συληθήσεται Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 761 ; ταῦτ᾽ (i.e. τὰ τόξα) ἐσυλήθην ἐγώ Sophocles Tragicus “Philoctetes” 413; λέκτρα συλᾶσθαι βίᾳ Euripides Tragicus “Iphigenia Aulidensis” 1275; συληθεὶς τὰς βοῦς Isocrates Orator 6.19; σεσυλήμεθα τὰ ἡμέτερα ὑπὸ τούτων Demosthenes Orator 35.26.
__2 with accusative, strip a person of his arms, ἦ τινα συλήσων νεκύων Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 10.343 : generally, pillage, plunder, τὰ ἱρά, τοὺς θεούς, etc., Herodotus Historicus 6.101, Plato Philosophus “Leges” 864d, etc.; τοὺς νεώς Isocrates Orator 4.155; θεῶν βρέτη Aeschylus Tragicus “Persae” 810; νεκρόν Plato Philosophus “Respublica” 469d :—passive, βαρβάρων συλᾶσθ᾽ ὕπο Euripides Tragicus “Helena” 600.
__3 with accusative of things, strip off, ὄφρα τάχιστα τεύχεα συλήσειε Ilias Homerus Epicus “Illiad” 4.466, etc.; frequently with additions, ἀπ᾽ ὤμων τεύχε᾽ ἐσύλα 6.28, etc.; τὰ μὲν ἔντε᾽ ἀπὸ χροὸς.. συλήσας 13.641.
__3.b take off or out, ἐσύλα τόξον took out the bow from its case, 4.105 ; σύλα πῶμα φαρέτρης took the lid off the quiver, prev. work 116 ; with a notion of violence or suddenness, κρᾶτα σ. Μεδοίσας Pindarus Lyricus “P.” 12.16.
__3.c carry off, τοὺς πολεμίους οὐ συλήσειν αὐτά (i.e. τὰ χρήματα) will not seize them as booty, Herodotus Historicus 5.36, compare 9.116 ; θεῶν γέρα σ. Aeschylus Tragicus “Prometheus Vinctus” 83, compare Sophocles Tragicus “Oedipus Coloneus” 922, “Ph.” 1365; λόγοις τὰ τῶν προγόνων ἔργα συλήσας καὶ διασύρας Demosthenes Orator 19.313; σ. κατὰ βραχὺ τὴν τῶν πυρετῶν διάθεσιν Stephanus Medicus “in Gal.” 1.295 Demosthenes Orator :—passive, to be carried off as spoil, ἄγαλμα σεσυλημένον Herodotus Historicus 6.118 ; to be taken away, Euripides Tragicus “Hippolytus” 799: metaph., συλᾶται ὕπνος ἀπὸ γλεφάρων Bacchylides Lyricus “fragment” 3.10.
__3.d exercise right of σῦλαι, “IG” 9(1).333.3 (Locr., 5th c.BC): —passive, πανταχοῦ συλωμένων ἡμῶν the right of reprisals was exercised against us everywhere, Isocrates Orator 3.33.
__4 after Homerus Epicus, with accusative person et genitive rei, τίς σε δαίμων συλᾷ πάτρα; carries thee away from.. , Euripides Tragicus “Helena” 669: —passive, συλαθεὶς ἀγενείων stealing from among the boys, and enlisting among the men, Pindarus Lyricus “O.” 9.89.
