1) iemand die de tempel veegt en reinigt; 2) iemand die voor de tempel moet zorgen, in orde houden en versieren, "koster"; 3) de aanbidder van een godheid; 3a) het woord komt voor op munten die nog bewaard zijn, het was een eretitel (tempelbewaarder) van bepaalde steden, vooral in Klein-Azië, waarin een speciale eredienst van een godheid, of soms wel van een vergoddelijkte menselijke heerser was gevestigd; gebruikt van Efeze.
